Energy production (ATP) is vital to our body and takes place in the mitochondria. In adult humans, the amount of ATP produced and used each day is approximately equal to their body mass. A overly active HPA stress axis not only promotes increased synthesis of glucocorticoids but also monoamine oxidase overexpression, thereby causing mitochondrial dysfunction (epigenetically required mitochondriopathy) as the hydrocortisone produced in the adrenal cortex enhances MAO-B overexpression and causes chronic and toxic stress through an overly active HPA axis.

Spermidine, often likened to a cellular hoover, supports removal of toxic waste products (autophagy) from the cell.

Autophagy promotes cellular health, improved functionality and increased longevity: rendundant and excess or damaged cellular macromolecules (misfolded proteins, DNA, RNA), complete cell organelles and intracellular bacteria, viruses or other microorganisms will be degraded in the lysosymes using hydrolytic enzymes.

Mitochondrial dysfunction can be found in numerous neurodegenerative diseases

such as Huntington’s disease (HD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), Alzheimer dementia (AD), amyothrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), stroke and epilepsy. In addition, recent studies have indicated that mitochondrial malfunctioning may also be involved in some psychiatric diseases like bipolar depression (BD), depression and some metabolic diseases like diabetes mellitus.

(-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine inhibits the expression (higher than healthy expression) of monoamine oxidase A and B and protects mitochondria from increased ROS exposure and ATP deficiency.

Ademetionine = (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine) deficiency is increases with age. The level of ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine synthesis is already decreased by a third at the age of 35.

De novo synthesis of spermidine is already reduced by a third in young adults. The biosynthesis of spermidine requires ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine.

A sufficient supply and age dependent supplementation of ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine secures glutathion biosynthesis through transsulfuration in the carbon cycle. Glutathione is the most potent cellular anti-oxidant.

A sufficient supply and age dependent supplementation of ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine protects the cell from endoplasmatic reticulum stress thereby supporting healthy protein synthesis.

A sufficient supply and age dependent supplementation of ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine results in production of the required levels of the neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline at nerve synapses.

In adults, it is therefore mandatory to supplement ademetionine= (-)-S-adenosyl-L-methionine in order to maintain cellular health.
